Citibank India client asset book hits ₹1 lakh crore as institutional banking surges
Chief executive K Balasubramanian says expanding global trade ties and resilient domestic markets position India for long-term capital inflows.

Citibank India has expanded its institutional client asset portfolio past ₹1 lakh crore, driven by rapid growth across corporate lending, market operations, and capital market transactions.
The landmark follows a strategic pivot toward core institutional banking. For the fiscal year ended March 2026, the bank reported a 17.3 per cent increase in net profit to ₹7,261 crore, while total income rose 4.5 per cent to ₹23,176 crore. Institutional revenues jumped 76 per cent between March 2023 and March 2026, representing a compound annual growth rate of 21 per cent. Over the same period, total balance sheet assets expanded by 16.3 per cent year-on-year to ₹3.14 lakh crore.

Addressing global capital flows, chief executive K Balasubramanian noted that while foreign funds have recently favoured overseas markets with concentrated artificial intelligence exposure, India's broader economic fundamentals remain solid. Impending trade agreements, particularly along UK-India and EU-India corridors, are expected to create substantial direct investment opportunities for multinational firms raising capital in domestic markets.
Domestic institutional capital has also established a resilient foundation for Indian equities, supporting initial public offerings even during global market shifts. Citi remains involved in several major upcoming transactions, with a pipeline of over a dozen companies preparing public filings.
The bank has also rapidly scaled its offshore operations at Gujarat International Finance Tec-City (GIFT City). Assets managed through its GIFT City branch have grown from around $300 million to $400 million up to $2.5 billion. In addition, Citi mobilised approximately $5 billion in offshore capital, including $1.5 billion raised in partnership with Axis Bank under foreign currency non-resident deposit structures.
