Figma launches Specs Editor at Config India to keep AI agents on-brand

Figma has launched Figma Specs, a Markdown-based editor designed to set clear visual guidelines for both human designers and autonomous AI agents. Announced at the company's inaugural Config India event, the tool allows product teams to maintain brand consistency as automated tools take on a larger role in building user interfaces.

India is now Figma's largest user market outside the United States, making the decision to host its major developer gathering in the country a recognition of India's fast-expanding digital ecosystem and global engineering footprint.

How Figma Specs works for AI design teams

The new Specs editor can operate either as a standalone document or directly within the Figma canvas. It pulls together design libraries, code repositories, brand guidelines and FigJam diagrams into a single central reference point. Both Figma's internal AI agents and third-party tools can access this system to ensure generated layouts stay strictly within established brand rules.

Alongside the Specs editor, Figma announced that its on-canvas agent is now available to a broader user base, providing structured controls to guide generative outputs. The company's code layers feature has also moved into public beta, giving users the ability to convert design mockups directly into interactive code through conversational prompts.

Platform updates and integrations

Figma expanded its Model Context Protocol (MCP) to connect with more than 20 external developer tools, including Indian artificial intelligence startup Sarvam alongside platforms such as Open Code, Dia and Grok Bot. The company is also linking Payload, the open-source headless content management system it acquired last year, with Figma Make to allow teams to publish dynamic websites directly from their designs.

Speaking at the event, Figma Chief Design Officer Loredana Crisan said AI tools have fundamentally shifted software creation, with teams now generating significantly more code during product exploration than is ultimately shipped to production. The rapid adoption of these capabilities across Indian technology firms underscores the country's central role in shaping the next generation of software development.
