Google Maps brings conversational Gemini AI to Apple CarPlay
Drivers using iPhone dashboards can now ask multi-step navigation queries and report road incidents hands-free.

Drivers using Apple CarPlay can now hold natural conversations with Google’s Gemini artificial intelligence assistant while navigating, nearly twelve months after the system first arrived on Android Auto.
The voice update launched first for motorists in the United States, with a wider international rollout already under way. The software allows drivers to tap a dedicated Gemini icon directly on the Google Maps display inside their car’s dashboard console, replacing standard voice commands with a more flexible, spoken interaction.
What conversational Gemini does on CarPlay
Rather than forcing motorists to issue rigid, one-line directions, the conversational assistant handles complex, multi-stage queries without requiring hands on the screen. Drivers can ask for recommendations for local stops or restaurants, follow up with requests for alternate routes, and instruct the system to avoid toll roads or specific highways in a single continuous exchange.
According to Google, the updated CarPlay integration is designed to help drivers:
- Seek contextual recommendations for stops, fuel, and places of interest along an active route.
- Issue complex navigation instructions, such as adding waypoints while excluding toll roads.
- Report live road hazards, traffic disruptions, and delays hands-free using natural speech.
Differences between Android Auto and Apple CarPlay
While the expansion gives iPhone owners access to Gemini’s natural-language navigation, it does not include the full range of capabilities recently introduced across Google’s own automotive platforms.
Google recently rolled out Personal Intelligence features for Android Auto and vehicles equipped with Google built-in software. Those tools allow the voice assistant to draw upon personal user data across several connected services, including Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Photos, YouTube, and web search history.
| Feature | Android Auto / Google built-in | Apple CarPlay |
|---|---|---|
| Conversational navigation | Yes | Yes |
| Multi-step routing requests | Yes | Yes |
| Hands-free traffic reporting | Yes | Yes |
| Personal app integration (Gmail, Calendar) | Yes | Not available |
The CarPlay version remains focused strictly on navigation, travel stops, and live traffic reporting. Google has not stated whether personal data access across its broader software suite will eventually be introduced to the Apple platform.
Availability and rollout
The feature began appearing on US infotainment screens this week through an update to the Google Maps application. Google confirmed that the global release is progressing, though it has not yet published an exact timetable for specific regional markets.
