OpenAI has begun rolling out an interactive visual interface called Intelligent UI, pairing the design overhaul with the release of its new GPT-6 model.

Rather than relying solely on text or static pictures, the new system embeds interactive graphics directly into conversation threads. Responses can now include clickable buttons, editable graphs, tailored calculators, and task-specific diagrams that users can manipulate on screen.

The feature is available immediately to paid ChatGPT subscribers across Pro, Plus, Business, and Enterprise plans. Access expands on Thursday to users on the free and lower-cost Go tiers.

What is ChatGPT Intelligent UI?

During a briefing with reporters, OpenAI staff demonstrated the interface generating dynamic learning aids for abstract topics. In one example, product manager Aarush Selvan asked the system to explain how an aircraft wing generates lift. Rather than generating paragraphs of text, ChatGPT produced diagrams explaining the mechanics of flight.

Selvan said that although ChatGPT has historically operated as a text-centred service, the aim is to help people complete everyday tasks where reading alone is inefficient.

"The most helpful answers aren’t just text," Selvan said, pointing to use cases such as travel planning, following recipes, and studying technical subjects.

Other demonstrations shown by the company included bicycle mechanical breakdowns, custom route maps for multi-day hikes, and a dynamic personal savings calculator.

How the visual interface works for users

OpenAI stated that the primary objective behind Intelligent UI is to simplify the process of learning complex material. The change also shifts ChatGPT closer to an interactive workspace, competing directly with dedicated productivity apps and visual search tools.

For people who prefer standard text responses, the visual elements are not mandatory. OpenAI confirmed that users will be able to customise their preferences and reduce the number of visual elements appearing in their chat responses.

The company has not yet detailed how the new interface impacts token consumption or whether third-party developers building on the API will be granted access to embed Intelligent UI components into outside applications.
