Soket Labs and ZenteiQ launch indigenous AI models under IndiaAI Mission
The rollout of EKA-1 and the Dhir series marks a significant step in expanding India's sovereign technological capabilities and digital infrastructure.
Indian technology firms Soket Labs and ZenteiQ have launched new indigenous artificial intelligence foundation models under the government's flagship IndiaAI Mission, demonstrating significant progress in the nation's drive for sovereign tech capabilities.
Unveiled in the presence of Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) Secretary S Krishnan and senior IndiaAI officials, the initial releases include Soket Labs' EKA-1 and ZenteiQ's Dhir 2B and Dhir 5B models.
The initiative forms part of the government's broader strategy to build a robust domestic AI ecosystem, reducing dependence on external platforms and fostering native technological innovation from the ground up.
Speaking at the launch, ZenteiQ Chief Executive Professor Sashikumaar Ganesan explained that the Dhir 2B and Dhir 5B models feature two billion and five billion parameters respectively. Built as compact systems, they can operate locally on mobile devices without needing a cloud connection, providing users with immediate access to AI solutions.
"Users can get AI solutions in their hands without even going to the cloud," Ganesan said, adding that a free mobile application will be released on the Google Play Store and Apple App Store alongside plans for an upcoming nine-billion parameter model.
Homegrown AI capabilities
The ability to execute artificial intelligence models directly on personal hardware strengthens data privacy while supporting the wider goal of making digital services accessible across the country.
