Chennai Central to Arakkonam AC suburban train services launched on trial
The 12-coach rake operates on weekdays, offering relief to tens of thousands of daily passengers travelling along the busy suburban corridor.

Southern Railway has launched a new air-conditioned suburban train service between Chennai Central and Arakkonam railway stations on a trial basis, bringing upgraded commuting infrastructure to one of Tamil Nadu's busiest suburban routes.
The service, operated on weekdays, introduces a 12-coach air-conditioned rake along the corridor. It is aimed directly at meeting surging demand from office workers, government staff, and private sector employees who travel between the industrial-residential hub of Arakkonam and downtown Chennai.
Timetable and station stops
The weekday schedule begins in the morning from Avadi. The initial run departs Avadi at 6:30 am, reaching Arakkonam at 7:45 am.
From Arakkonam, the main morning commuter service pulls out from platform 1 at 8:00 am and reaches Chennai Central at 9:30 am. On this run, the train halts at limited intermediate stations: Thiruvalangadu, Kadambattur, Tiruvallur, Thiruninravur, Villivakkam, Perambur, and Basin Bridge.
Following that run, the rake departs Chennai Central at 9:40 am, making all scheduled stops before terminating at Avadi at 10:25 am. In the evening, the train departs Arakkonam at 8:10 pm, arriving back at Avadi at 9:10 pm before being moved to the railway yard.

Passenger comfort on a heavy-traffic route
Railway authorities estimate that around 45,000 passengers board trains at Arakkonam railway station each day on average, with numbers swelling significantly around public holidays and festival dates. Conventional fast suburban trains typically take nearly two hours to cover the section, which can make the journey taxing during hot weather.
Passengers had long sought temperature-controlled services on the section. Arakkonam experiences high temperatures through much of the year, making packed peak-hour travel especially demanding for elderly passengers, women, and daily commuters.
The deployment of modern air-conditioned suburban rakes reflects Indian Railways' ongoing modernisation of regional mass transit networks. If passenger demand remains robust during the trial period, the initiative could pave the way for regular, expanded AC local services across Chennai's suburban network.
