CPCL posts net profit more than three‑times higher in Q2 FY27

Chennai Petroleum Corporation Ltd announced a net profit of ₹2,271 crore for the quarter ending 30 September 2026, according to the company’s filing dated 22 Oct 2026. That figure is more than three times the ₹732 crore recorded in the same quarter a year earlier. The same filing shows revenue from operations at ₹22,109 crore, up from ₹20,069 crore a year ago.

Livemint’s coverage of the results puts the profit at ₹2,247.03 crore and revenue at ₹22,055 crore. The slight difference reflects rounding and the use of consolidated versus standalone numbers, but both sources agree the profit surge exceeds 200 % YoY.

Operational drivers

The refiner processed 2.590 million metric tonnes of crude, achieving a 98 % capacity utilisation despite a planned turnaround of one crude unit. Gross refining margin (GRM) leapt to $20.41 per barrel, more than double the $9.04 per barrel recorded a year earlier, underpinning the profit jump.

For the six‑month period to 30 Sept 2026, CPCL’s revenue rose to ₹51,486 crore and net profit to ₹3,288 crore, a clear indication that the upward trend is not limited to a single quarter.

Dividend payout

The board approved an interim dividend of ₹25 per equity share, representing a 250 % payout on the ₹10 face value. The record date for eligibility was fixed for 30 Oct 2026. Shares responded positively, trading about 0.7 % higher on the BSE shortly after the announcement.

What the numbers mean for the sector

Analysts point to the strong demand for refined petroleum products across southern India, coupled with CPCL’s efficient refinery operations, as key factors behind the surge. The company’s ability to maintain near‑full utilisation while expanding margins signals a resilient operating model that can sustain earnings growth even as global crude prices fluctuate.

Looking ahead

Management has indicated that the refinery will continue to run at high utilisation levels for the remainder of the fiscal year, with no major shutdowns planned. If demand remains robust, the next quarter could see profit levels matching or exceeding the current quarter’s performance.
