India has created 11 crore unique digital identity cards for farmers, crossing its national target five months ahead of the scheduled deadline of 31 March 2027.

Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan confirmed that the milestone was completed by the night of 23 October 2026. The rollout, undertaken as part of the Digital Agriculture Mission, brings a significant share of the country's agrarian workforce onto a single digital platform.

What the new farmer IDs deliver

The unique Farmer ID operates as an official digital identity, designed to give agriculturalists faster access to state welfare schemes, institutional bank credit, crop insurance, and disaster relief. By creating a verified digital registry, the system eliminates the need for farmers to submit paper documents repeatedly to different authorities.

Chouhan said field-level officers, state governments, and the central ministry worked in close coordination to complete the registration drive ahead of time. He noted that in previous years, farmers spent considerable time and money verifying their credentials for every individual government scheme.

Streamlining welfare and financial services

Under the digital infrastructure framework, the government aims to increase transparency and cut procedural delays in agricultural support programmes. Verified farmer profiles will allow direct validation for subsidised supplies, direct benefit transfers, and emergency assistance following crop damage.

The Agriculture Ministry plans to integrate further rural banking and extension services into the platform, ensuring eligible landholders receive benefits without administrative bottlenecks.
