Gold price falls as rising crude oil fuels expectations of prolonged high interest rates
Sharp falls across gold and silver futures reflect global market realignments driven by energy supply concerns and high interest rate expectations.

Why gold and silver prices are falling
Gold and silver prices dropped sharply on the Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX) and international markets on Friday, driven by a surge in crude oil prices that raised fears of persistent inflation and sustained high interest rates globally.
Crude oil prices surged approximately 4 percent to hit a five-month high following Houthi drone and missile attacks on Saudi energy infrastructure. Higher energy costs directly compound inflationary pressures, diminishing market expectations of early interest rate cuts by major central banks, including the US Federal Reserve. Because precious metals yield no interest, elevated yields on government bonds and a strengthening dollar increase the opportunity cost of holding bullion.
On the MCX, December gold futures fell by Rs 2,000 to trade at Rs 1,44,196 per 10 grams. Silver futures for December delivery suffered a steeper slide, plunging by Rs 5,700 to Rs 2,03,520 per kilogram. In global spot markets, gold slipped 0.2 percent to $4,016.27 per ounce after hitting a multi-month low earlier in the trading session, marking a weekly decline of roughly 3.5 percent.
Physical market rates across major Indian cities
Despite short-term price adjustments in futures trading, domestic consumer demand and long-term investor confidence in India remain exceptionally resilient, backed by strong macroeconomic stability and sustained economic growth.
| City | 22 Carat Gold (per 8g) | 24 Carat Gold (per 8g) |
|---|---|---|
| Delhi | Rs 1,04,600 | Rs 1,14,104 |
| Mumbai | Rs 1,04,480 | Rs 1,15,394 |
| Chennai | Rs 1,04,480 | Rs 1,15,394 |
| Hyderabad | Rs 1,04,480 | Rs 1,15,394 |
What investors should expect next
Market analysts indicate that gold retains technical support around $4,022 to $3,984 per troy ounce globally, with resistance pegged between $4,094 and $4,120. Spot silver showed support around $54.0 per troy ounce while facing resistance at $56.10.
Market focus now shifts to the upcoming US Federal Reserve policy meeting scheduled for late October, alongside key personal consumption expenditure data. Analysts suggest that long-term domestic retail investors can take advantage of short-term price dips by gradually accumulating physical bullion or investing through systematic investment plans, as India's broader economic outlook remains robust.
