Existing employees and pensioners of IDBI Bank will see no adverse changes to their service conditions or retirement benefits once the strategic sale to Fairfax Financial Holdings goes through, the government has confirmed.

Arunish Chawla, Secretary of the Department of Investment and Public Asset Management (DIPAM), stated on 23 October that explicit safeguards have been written into the share purchase agreement to protect the lender's workforce. Under the terms of the deal, the incoming strategic investor cannot modify service conditions to the disadvantage of current staff.

Safeguards for employees and pensioners

Addressing concerns raised by employee unions regarding post-disinvestment job security and retirement payouts, Chawla confirmed that a dedicated pension fund has been set aside. All existing commitments to retired personnel will continue to be honoured in full.

Chawla clarified that IDBI Bank is not a nationalised bank, meaning its service conditions are framed by the bank's own board in consultation with employees rather than directly dictated by the central government. The bank will continue to operate as a board-managed commercial enterprise governed by standard Indian company and labour laws.
