Indian equities and asset markets are anchored by fundamental business earnings and vast domestic savings rather than speculative capital flows, according to a report by Kotak Institutional Equities. Advising investors to look past short-term noise and foreign portfolio fluctuations, analysts Sanjeev Prasad, Anindya Bhowmik and Sunita Baldawa emphasised that long-term value creation remains firmly rooted in corporate performance and national economic stability.

The report, titled Investing 101 and endless, pointless discussions, challenges popular narratives that attribute market trends primarily to foreign portfolio investor outflows or sector-hopping capital. Instead, Kotak notes that India’s macroeconomic strength is backed by massive household financial savings, which comfortably dwarf annual initial public offering issuances and provide a steady buffer against external market volatility. Foreign investors, meanwhile, continue to deploy capital aggressively in India's primary markets, reflecting global confidence in the nation's underlying growth trajectory.

Dismissing concerns that large primary market issuances drain liquidity from stock exchanges, Kotak clarified that secondary market trades simply transfer existing shares and cash between buyers and sellers without altering corporate balance sheets. For currency and stock valuations alike, allowing market-driven mechanisms to reflect genuine economic strength ensures long-term resilience.

Long-term ValueDetermined by momentumAnchored by earnings per share and fundamentals

According to the analysts, stock prices and broader asset valuations ultimately hinge on two key operational parameters: earnings per share and price-to-earnings multiples. While market sentiment and discount rates alter short-term valuation multiples, sustained growth in corporate earnings drives long-term wealth creation.

With India's domestic financial savings continuing to expand and macroeconomic indicators remaining robust, financial experts advocate letting market-determined mechanisms operate freely across asset classes, including currency valuations. Kotak’s analysis reinforces that India's financial foundation remains well-equipped to navigate global headwinds while delivering steady economic expansion.
