Indian equity markets recorded a sharp rally on Tuesday, with the Sensex surging by over 1,100 points following Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman's positive signals regarding tax discussions and the country's resilient economic fundamentals.

Speaking at the Bloomberg New Economy Forum, Sitharaman acknowledged ongoing discussions surrounding long-term capital gains tax (LTCG) and the securities transaction tax (STT). She noted that domestic and foreign investors frequently comment on capital gains treatment and market transaction costs, adding that open debate on aligning asset classes remains a healthy process as budget consultations begin.

The benchmark Sensex climbed to an intraday high of more than 1,100 points, while the Nifty 50 gained over 350 points. Strong quarterly performance in the technology sector further bolstered market sentiment, led by an 8% rise in HCL Tech and a 6% gain in Tata Consultancy Services.

Private investment and balance sheet strength

Sitharaman highlighted that domestic private capital is moving steadily into key growth sectors, backed by corporate balance sheets that have cleared legacy debts and accumulated substantial cash reserves. She credited structural banking reforms and disciplined financial management for resolving past asset issues.

Private capital is increasingly flowing into strategic high-growth areas, including renewable energy, semiconductor design and fabrication, biosimilars, pharmaceuticals, green hydrogen, and aircraft maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) facilities. India's civil aviation market is growing at roughly 16% annually, creating substantial opportunities for domestic technical services.

Infrastructure growth and currency stability

Addressing long-term capital mobilisation, Sitharaman detailed the expansion of the National Infrastructure Pipeline (NIP), which has grown from $2 trillion at its 2019 launch to over $4.5 trillion today. Specialized institutions such as the National Bank for Financing Infrastructure and Development (NaBFID) and the National Investment and Infrastructure Fund (NIIF) continue to provide patient, long-term capital for high-risk projects.

On foreign exchange, Sitharaman reassured investors that India's economic fundamentals and reserve position remain sound. She said the Reserve Bank of India is focused on curbing excessive volatility rather than fixing the rupee at a specific level, allowing the currency to reflect underlying economic strength while maintaining stability against global headwinds.
