Appointment details
The Reserve Bank of India has appointed Sudhakar Malli as its new Executive Director, elevating a career central banker with nearly three decades of experience to its senior leadership team.
The appointment became effective on 1 October 2026, the central bank announced in a statement. Prior to his promotion, Malli served as the Chief General Manager-in-Charge of the Department of Supervision within the RBI.
In his new role, Malli will specifically look after the Department of Supervision (Supervisory Assessment). The assignment puts him in charge of the critical systems used to monitor the stability, compliance, and overall health of India's financial institutions.
Decades of supervisory experience
Malli is a career central banker who has spent approximately 30 years within the RBI. The vast majority of his career—spanning more than two and a half decades—has been focused directly on the supervision of financial entities. This includes detailed oversight of commercial banks, non-banking financial companies (NBFCs), and co-operative banks.
In addition to his work within India's domestic financial system, Malli has spent around five years gaining regulatory experience in overseas jurisdictions. This international tenure has provided him with firsthand exposure to foreign banking supervisory standards and global regulatory frameworks.
Malli's career at the RBI has not been limited entirely to supervision. He has also worked in the area of currency management, the department responsible for overseeing the integrity, distribution, and logistics of banknotes and coins across the country's extensive banking network.
Engineering and banking credentials
Malli's academic and professional background combines technical training with financial expertise. He holds a Bachelor of Technology degree in Mechanical Engineering. Alongside his engineering background, he is a Certified Associate of the Indian Institute of Bankers (CAIIB), a professional qualification that denotes deep expertise in financial analysis, banking operations, and risk management.
The official announcement of Malli's promotion was issued in a press release by Brij Raj, Chief General Manager at the Reserve Bank of India.
