SEBI warns investors against fraudulent stock tips in invitation-only WhatsApp groups
Market regulator warns unregistered operators are using foreign phone numbers and fake testimonials to lure retail traders.

India's capital markets regulator has warned retail investors to stay away from invitation-only WhatsApp groups that circulate unauthorised stock tips and trading recommendations.
In a public cautionary advisory, the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) said unregistered operators are running closed groups under the guise of offering free financial education. Many of these channels operate through overseas mobile numbers and lure participants with fabricated claims of high returns.
How the WhatsApp scam works
The regulator identified a coordinated deception known as astroturfing, where operators deploy collaborators within the group to post fake profit screenshots and shower praise on the supposed market expert. These messages are staged to engineer artificial credibility and convince participants to place trades without conducting basic checks.
When regulatory or platform enforcement actions shut these channels down, the operators quickly regroup. Members often receive fresh invitations from alternative numbers claiming that the prior group was closed due to social media risk-control policies. The operators then promise uninterrupted daily recommendations in the replacement group.
SEBI said that receiving an invitation to migrate to a backup group after a ban should be treated as an immediate red flag, advising investors to exit rather than follow administrators to a new channel.
| Operator tactic | What SEBI advises investors to do |
|---|---|
| Closed groups run via overseas numbers | Avoid joining or exit immediately |
| Screenshots claiming massive profits | Treat testimonials as fabricated astroturfing |
| Links to download trading apps | Never install unverified software |
| Direct invitations to backup groups | Exit at once; treat as a major red flag |
Regulatory guidance for retail investors
The advisory comes amid sustained growth in retail participation across India's financial markets, where the regulator has sharpened its scrutiny to safeguard individual household savings. Unregulated social media channels have increasingly become vehicles for pump-and-dump schemes and unauthorised investment advice.
SEBI specifically warned the public against downloading external applications or setting up trading accounts through links shared inside private messaging channels. Such applications can mimic authentic broker interfaces while diverting capital into fraudulent schemes.
The regulator reminded investors that legitimate financial advice must come strictly from registered market intermediaries. Anyone trading in the Indian markets should verify an analyst's credentials on SEBI's official portal and carry out transactions only through regulated brokers and authorised applications.
