What is happening

Millions of Americans relying on Social Security are on track to receive their largest monthly benefit boost in three years, with new estimates pointing to a cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) of between 3.5% and 3.6% for 2027.

The projected increase follows the release of August inflation figures from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics. The data showed that the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W) — the metric used by the government to calculate the annual adjustment — rose by 3.5% over the past 12 months.

While the official figure will not be finalised and announced by the Social Security Administration until 14 October, independent analysts and advocacy groups have begun recalculating their predictions.

Competing estimates

The estimates are slightly divided but point to a significant bump. Mary Johnson, an independent Social Security and Medicare policy analyst, revised her estimate up to 3.5%, citing stubbornly high energy costs. The Senior Citizens League, a nonpartisan advocacy group, also settled on 3.5%, a slight drop from its previous 3.6% estimate. Meanwhile, AARP raised its projection to 3.6%, up from the 3.5% it forecast in August.

A 3.6% raise would inject roughly $75 a month into the typical retiree's pocket, raising the average monthly benefit from $2,071 to around $2,146. A 3.5% increase would add about $68 to $70 to monthly payments. That would still be a larger boost than the 2.8% adjustment that approximately 75 million beneficiaries received in 2026.

Why are costs rising?

But whether the extra cash will feel like a pay rise is another matter. A massive surge in energy prices, driven by the ongoing war with Iran, has kept inflation high. On 11 September, diesel prices hit a record national average of $6.05 per gallon. Because diesel powers the trucks, trains, and farm machinery that move food and goods across the country, those fuel costs are expected to bleed into grocery bills and everyday retail prices.

There is also the recurring problem of rising healthcare costs. The base monthly premium for Medicare Part B is already projected to increase by $6.60 in 2027, rising to $209.50. Because these premiums are usually deducted directly from Social Security payments, they often consume a sizeable portion of any cost-of-living increase.

"Seniors will probably end up disappointed in the long run," said Shannon Benton, executive director of the Senior Citizens League. Benton pointed out that the cost-of-living adjustment only happens once a year, meaning retirees are left to absorb month-on-month price jumps on their own.

What happens next?

Hovering over these calculations is the existential threat to the programme’s long-term survival. The Social Security trust fund is projected to be depleted by the end of 2032. If Congress does not agree on a fix, law dictates that benefits must be slashed by an estimated 22% to keep the programme solvent.

Some policymakers have suggested capping or slowing down future cost-of-living adjustments to save money. However, advocates warn that such a move would immediately push millions of vulnerable retirees into poverty.
