What happened in Operation Sindoor

The Indian Air Force's precision strikes during Operation Sindoor demonstrated that no target across the western front lies beyond India's military reach, Chief of Air Staff Air Chief Marshal AP Singh said in an interview with Press Trust of India.

The four-day counterterror operation, launched in response to the Pahalgam terror attack in May last year, spanned 1,200 kilometres in breadth and 200 kilometres in depth. Indian forces targeted nine major terror hubs across Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, extending precision strikes as far as Rawalpindi following Pakistan's continued sheltering of terrorist networks.

Air Chief Marshal Singh confirmed that indigenously developed weapon systems performed exceptionally during the campaign, delivering crippling blows to terror infrastructure while maintaining a strict commitment to zero collateral damage.

Strategic capability and air defence integration

The Air Chief highlighted that Operation Sindoor validated the Indian Air Force's shift toward a capability-centric force structure. Rather than relying on individual platforms, the operation demonstrated the combined power of networked systems, electronic warfare, layered air defence, and precision stand-off weaponry.

India's home-grown air defence network successfully intercepted drones and stand-off weapons deployed by Pakistan during the conflict, allowing offensive actions to proceed with complete operational confidence.

Long-term defence vision for 2047

Looking ahead, Air Chief Marshal Singh stated that the air force is aligning its long-term modernisation with the national vision of Viksit Bharat 2047. The air force's Capability Perspective Plan 2047 outlines a structured path toward becoming a fully integrated, multi-domain aerospace force.

Future investments will focus on artificial intelligence, autonomous systems, space domain integration, and resilient cyber networks. The Air Chief stressed that self-reliance and domestic industrial manufacturing remain central to sustaining national security and supporting India's economic growth trajectory.
