Prime Minister Narendra Modi has held a personal telephone call with Captain Smit Machchhar, the Indian pilot who prevented a major aviation disaster by securing a flydubai aircraft after being stabbed in the cockpit.

During the conversation, Modi praised the captain's extraordinary presence of mind and quick decision-making under severe duress. The pilot, who sustained life-threatening injuries during the mid-air assault, managed to keep control of the situation and save the lives of hundreds of passengers on board. Modi led the national praise, telling Machchhar that his actions had saved lives and protected the reputation of Indian pilots globally.

How Captain Smit Machchhar survived the cockpit attack

The violence erupted inside the flight deck of the flydubai passenger jet, where an assailant managed to attack Machchhar, inflicting deep and debilitating stab wounds.

Recounting the ordeal directly to the Prime Minister, Machchhar described how he forced himself to push past his physical agony to secure the aircraft. In a moment of extreme terror, the captain opened the cockpit door to get assistance while reciting the Hanuman Chalisa, a Hindu prayer, to find the mental strength and courage to stay conscious and keep the plane flying.

The captain's resilience allowed the flight to land safely, preventing an outcome that could have mirrored historical aviation tragedies. In India, public and political reactions have compared the pilot's quick thinking to preventing a disaster on the scale of the September 11 attacks.

Geopolitical cooperation and medical recovery

The mid-air attack has prompted high-level diplomatic coordination in the Gulf region. Machchhar is currently receiving intensive medical treatment, and Modi took the opportunity during his call to publicly thank both Saudi Arabian and United Arab Emirates authorities for their prompt response and the high-quality medical care they have provided.

Modi reassured the recovering pilot that the Indian government remains fully committed to his welfare, telling Machchhar that he is "merely a phone call away" if any further assistance is needed.

The Prime Minister also reached out to the pilot's family, speaking with his parents, Bhupendra and Gita, and his wife, Sonal. Modi commended the family's strength, noting their fortitude and enduring cultural values during a period of immense stress.

While the flight ended without further casualties, the incident raises critical questions for international aviation security. Neither flydubai nor Gulf security agencies have explained how an attacker managed to breach a secure cockpit door—a barrier designed to be impenetrable from the cabin—to launch a life-threatening assault on a pilot mid-flight.
