Rajnath Singh unveils Indian Army Land Warfare Doctrine 2026 for tech-driven conflicts
The updated blueprint draws operational lessons from recent global clashes and Operation Sindoor, integrating artificial intelligence and drone tactics into ground combat.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh unveiled the Indian Army's updated Land Warfare Doctrine 2026 on Friday, setting out a 30-year strategic roadmap to prepare ground forces for high-technology, multi-domain conflicts.
Addressing the closing day of the three-day Army Commanders' Conference in New Delhi, Singh emphasised that land forces remain central to achieving decisive military and political outcomes, even as space, cyber, and maritime domain challenges grow. The revised blueprint succeeds the previous doctrine issued in December 2018 and aligns with the government's broader Defence Forces Vision 2047.
The 2026 framework incorporates operational lessons from recent global conflicts, including the Russia-Ukraine and Iran-United States engagements, as well as last year's Operation Sindoor against Pakistan. Those operations showed how autonomous systems, persistent surveillance, contested communications, and information warfare now shape the modern battlefield.
To match these operational demands, the military is launching targeted workforce initiatives. These include a three-level skill development programme in artificial intelligence for officers, a five-year roadmap for multi-domain training, and a directive making drone handling a secondary skill across the entire army.

Addressing senior commanders alongside Chief of Defence Staff General N. S. Raja Subramani and Chief of the Army Staff General Dhiraj Seth, Singh commended the military for adapting swiftly during Operation Sindoor, noting that innovative thinking and superior coordination delivered decisive results.
The Defence Minister also linked military readiness directly to national self-reliance, highlighting domestic manufacturing growth under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership.
Domestic defence production reached a record ‡1.78 lakh crore in the 2025-26 financial year, while defence exports rose to an all-time high of approximately ‡38,000 crore. Singh called on commanders to push forward with internal reforms to turn structural changes into improved frontline capabilities.
