Daler Mehndi interrupted on stage by Uttarakhand minister over performance decorum
Cabinet minister Subodh Uniyal intervened during a cultural night in Tehri, demanding respect for the sacred festival after questioning the singer's conduct.

A public dispute erupted during a Navratri cultural programme in Uttarakhand after state Cabinet Minister Subodh Uniyal walked onto the stage and told Punjabi singer Daler Mehndi to halt his performance, demanding that the sacred dignity of the festival be respected.
The incident took place on Sunday night at the historic Siddhpeeth Maa Kunjapuri Tourism and Development Fair in New Tehri. Video footage widely circulated on Monday showed the minister confronting the singer directly in front of the audience, criticising the standard of the performance and raising objections over whether Mehndi was properly singing live or relying on a backing soundtrack.
Confrontation on stage
Mr Uniyal, who represents the Narendra Nagar assembly constituency, stepped onto the platform during Mehndi's set to express clear displeasure. He reminded the performer that the fair is rooted in religious devotion to Goddess Durga and that high standards of discipline and respect were expected from invited artists.
"There is a Durga Mata programme for Navratri, and you are singing at the event after drinking alcohol, which is not appropriate," Mr Uniyal said on stage. He questioned how the artist could sing properly when he appeared unable to speak clearly, telling him: "We called you so that our people could be entertained. You are making a fool of us. This is wrong. You have a big name; we should respect that. You were called because you have a big name."
In the recorded exchange, Mehndi attempted to defuse the situation, speaking into his microphone and appealing to the minister: "Sir, I request you with folded hands... please leave the stage."
Preservation of cultural sanctity
The Kunjapuri Fair is one of Tehri Garhwal's most prominent religious and cultural gatherings, organised annually around the sacred Siddhpeeth temple. For the administration and local leaders, maintaining the traditional sanctity of the event remains a matter of public duty, particularly during the pious days of Navratri when thousands gather for spiritual celebrations.
While the minister alleged that the singer was inebriated on stage, the claim has not been independently verified through medical examination. Mehndi has not yet issued a formal public statement addressing the confrontation or the allegations.
The intervention by the senior minister underlines the state leadership's strict insistence on cultural propriety and accountability at publicly backed religious festivals, ensuring that major entertainment acts do not compromise the dignity expected by local devotees.
