Veteran Tamil scholar Solomon Pappaiah dies at 90

What happened

Solomon Pappaiah, the esteemed Tamil scholar, orator, and popular Pattimandram debate moderator, has died at the age of 90. He passed away on Friday, September 11, 2026, at a private hospital in Madurai following treatment for age-related ailments. His death has drawn condolences from numerous political and cultural leaders, who praised his lasting contributions to Tamil language and public discourse.

Who he was

Pappaiah became a household name across Tamil Nadu and among Tamil speakers globally through his unique style of moderating Pattimandram debates. He possessed a rare talent for breaking down complex literary, philosophical, and social concepts into simple, engaging language that resonated with ordinary people. His televised debates, which explored socially relevant themes with wit and humour, significantly broadened the reach of Tamil literature and intellectual discussion.

Beyond his public persona, Pappaiah had a distinguished academic career. He served The American College in Madurai from 1961 to 1994, heading its Department of Tamil. During his tenure, the college's Undergraduate Tamil programme was upgraded to a full-fledged Postgraduate Department in 1986, a significant milestone under his leadership. Colleagues and former students remember him as a dedicated educator and mentor who profoundly influenced generations of students.

In recognition of his immense contributions to literature and education, the Government of India awarded him the prestigious Padma Shri in 2021. He had also received the Tamil Nadu government's Kalaimamani award in 2000. Pappaiah was also a prolific writer and poet, authoring commentaries on ancient Tamil literary works, including the Thirukkural. He even made appearances in several Tamil films, notably in Shankar-directed productions such as Boys and Sivaji: The Boss.

Tributes and legacy

Leaders across the political spectrum have expressed their sorrow. AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami said Pappaiah's speeches were not just witty but also focused on spreading knowledge about the glory and uniqueness of Tamil language and culture. AMMK founder T.T.V. Dhinakaran and AIPTMMK general secretary V.K. Sasikala also offered their condolences.

J. Paul Jayakar, Principal and Secretary of The American College, stated that the college community, along with countless admirers, friends, and students, is mourning the loss of "a true giant." He added that Pappaiah's "sharp wit, deep scholarship, and lifelong passion for Tamil will be deeply missed."

Born on February 22, 1936, in Sathangudi village near Tirumangalam in Madurai district, Solomon Pappaiah is survived by a daughter and a son. His wife, Jeyabai, passed away earlier.
