A fire in a northeast Delhi restaurant kitchen triggered sudden panic late on Tuesday evening, forcing several people to jump from a first-floor window to escape the smoke.

Despite the chaotic scene, nobody was injured, police and emergency services confirmed.

The blaze started around 10.34pm at Udham Fish Point, a popular eatery situated near Jafrabad within the jurisdiction of the Welcome police station in Maujpur. The restaurant occupies the ground floor of a four-storey building, where the fire originated inside the kitchen area.

What happened inside the restaurant

Smoke quickly spread up through the structure, prompting patrons and staff seated on the floor above to seek an immediate exit. Caught by the sudden rush of heat and fumes, several people scrambled towards the first-floor windows.

Onlookers and local residents quickly assembled below to catch people leaping from the window ledge. Video footage from the spot captured diners, including a woman, dropping down into the arms of the crowd assembled on the street.

Swift action averts wider damage

Restaurant workers acted quickly to control the blaze before it could spread across the four-storey premises. Staff used on-site equipment to douse the flames within minutes, preventing structural damage and containing the danger to the kitchen.

A Delhi Fire Services tender reached the scene shortly after the distress call was logged. Firefighters secured the site and inspected the building alongside personnel from the Welcome police station to ensure no lingering hotspots or electrical risks remained.

Local authorities praised the swift response of nearby residents and the prompt action of the restaurant workers, noting that effective crowd cooperation ensured no patrons suffered serious harm during the evacuation. Police confirmed that all occupants were accounted for safely.
