Eight injured in shooting after Tuscaloosa block party

Eight people, including several juveniles, were injured when gunfire erupted shortly after a permitted neighbourhood block party in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, on Saturday night.

Police officers rushed to the 2600 block of 22nd Street at 10:48 pm following reports of a mass shooting. They arrived to find a chaotic scene with a large crowd gathered and multiple victims on the ground. Officers began administering first aid immediately, keeping the casualties alive until fire rescue teams and paramedics could reach the scene.

The shooting took place in an area that had hosted an outdoor neighbourhood block party earlier in the day. The City of Tuscaloosa had authorised the event to run until 10:00 pm. The violence broke out less than an hour after that permit expired.

The victims and the aftermath

Investigators initially reported that seven people had been hurt. However, a eighth victim walked into a local hospital on Sunday afternoon to receive treatment for a gunshot graze wound, raising the total casualty count.

Three of the victims were rushed to hospital with serious injuries on Saturday night. By Sunday morning, police confirmed that all eight victims were in a stable condition.

The physical aftermath of the shooting was extensive. Investigators found dozens of shell casings scattered across the tarmac near the Faith Refuge Apostolic Church of God, and several parked, unoccupied cars were riddled with bullet holes.

No suspects are currently in custody, and police have not yet released any details regarding a potential motive or how many shooters were involved.

A community left reeling

Local faith leaders and anti-violence activists have expressed deep frustration over the shooting, pointing out how quickly a peaceful community gathering was shattered.

"It’s embarrassing. It’s dangerous... people cannot get together and have a fun event without someone resorting to violence," said Dr Ransey O’Daniel, a pastor at Christ Baptist Church who works with the Ceasefire Campaign Taskforce.

O'Daniel warned of the damaging lessons such violence teaches young people growing up in the area. "It demonstrates that picking up the gun is the answer. But that is a lie," he said, adding that "pain, or a bullet, does not care whether you’re Black, white, male, female... when it goes inside your body, it can take your life."

FBI joins the investigation

The Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit and the Tuscaloosa Police Crime Scene Unit are leading the investigation, but the scale of the incident has drawn in federal help. Agents from the FBI's Birmingham field office are now actively assisting local police.

Because the shooting took place shortly after a large block party, investigators believe many people in the area may have captured crucial evidence on their mobile phones.

The FBI has set up a dedicated digital media tip line where members of the public can directly upload photos, mobile phone footage, or security camera video. Local detectives are also urging anyone with information to contact the Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit or submit anonymous tips via the local police department's mobile app.
