Emergency response on South Street

Firefighters are tackling a major blaze at a scrapyard on South Street in Glasgow after emergency services were alerted late on Friday night.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said its operations control received the first call at 11.23pm on 9 October. By early Saturday morning, nine fire engines, two high-reach appliances, and specialist support units were on the scene working to bring the flames under control.

Footage shared on social media showed thick smoke rising high above the area, visible across large parts of the city. A passenger landing at Glasgow Airport reported seeing the fire from the air as their plane approached the runway.

Local reports of explosions

People living nearby described hearing repeated loud bangs and explosions for roughly 30 minutes after the fire broke out.

Police Scotland officers from the Greater Glasgow Division joined fire crews at the scene to manage cordons and issue public safety advice. Fire officials confirmed that there are no reported casualties.

Advice for nearby residents

The fire service has instructed residents living near South Street to keep their doors and windows closed as smoke continues to cover the surrounding area.

Motorists driving through smoke near the site have been advised to keep their windows shut, turn off air conditioning, and close all air vents. Emergency services have urged members of the public to avoid the area to keep access roads clear for emergency vehicles.

The fire service thanked the public for their assistance, adding that operations control had received a very high volume of calls and requested that people do not make further reports about the incident. The cause of the fire has not yet been established.
