A debris-laden flash flood tore through Chumnubri in northern Nepal's Gorkha district early on Sunday morning, washing away dozens of houses and cutting off walking trails after key bridges collapsed into the swollen Budhi Gandaki river.

Local officials said more than 35 homes have been swept away across several riverside settlements, including Salleri, Paiyuka and the riverbed market at Jagat. No deaths or injuries had been confirmed by Sunday afternoon, with district authorities crediting early morning warnings and hasty evacuations for preventing loss of life.

Panic began around 4:00 am when residents living along the riverbanks heard a deep, unnatural roar echoing down the gorges. Locals and trekkers staying in nearby guesthouses scrambled up steep hillsides in pitch darkness, leaving their belongings behind.

"The flood came early in the morning, and we could not even take out our belongings," Ram Kumar Gurung, the ward chair for Chumnubri-3, said. "Everyone fled as soon as we heard the flood was coming."

What triggered the sudden surge

The cause of the surge points towards a temporary natural dam breaking upstream. Gorkha's chief district officer, Dharmendra Kumar Mishra, said preliminary reports pointed to a major landslide falling into the river system above Siuribas.

Chumnubri Rural Municipality chair Nima Lama reported that a slide had blocked the Chumke Khola in Ward 6. Other residents pointed to the Syar stream, a Budhi Gandaki tributary running between Lokpa and Chumling. Sherap Gurung, who lives in Lokpa, said the torrent had stopped and restarted several times before daybreak, a classic warning sign of water pooling behind debris before bursting through.

Critically, the deluge arrived without local downpours. It had not been raining heavily in the immediate area overnight, which caught communities downstream off guard until the sound of churning rock and timber gave warning.

Bridges washed away and settlements cut off

Beyond the loss of homes, the surge severed transport links throughout the remote Himalayan valley. A suspension bridge connecting Ward 3 was carried away, alongside a bridge linking Nyakchet with Philim bazaar, according to Home Minister Sudan Gurung.

With footpaths washed out and river crossings gone, several settlements remain isolated on foot. The Flood Forecasting Division issued urgent SMS alerts to downstream riverside areas, while local police used loudspeakers to tell residents along the Budhi Gandaki to stay on high ground as water levels continued to fluctuate.

Rescue operations underway

Nepal Police, the Armed Police Force and local emergency personnel have mobilised across the corridor. The government deployed Nepali Army helicopters into the valley to assess damage from the air, evacuate stranded residents and drop emergency relief supplies.

Chief District Officer Mishra said he received the first emergency calls at 4:35 am, prompting immediate orders to clear lower riparian settlements. The Home Ministry urged families needing emergency assistance in the valley to contact its crisis hotline on 1234 while relief teams work to reach cut-off villages.
