A major fire has broken out at a residential building on Market Street in Nottingham city centre, forcing residents out of their homes and prompting a wide cordon across central streets.

Emergency crews were called to the scene late on Monday evening as flames took hold of the property, sending dense plumes of smoke and drifting ash across surrounding shopping and commercial quarters. Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service confirmed it was tackling the blaze and urged the public to stay clear of the area.

Residents inside the building were evacuated as the fire took hold. Outside, crowds gathered along the cordons as emergency appliances arrived to bring the fire under control. The service issued an urgent advisory shortly after 10:20pm warning anyone living nearby to keep their doors and windows shut against smoke drifting across the city centre.

Road closures across Nottingham city centre

The incident has brought traffic across the central retail district to a halt. Fire crews and police have closed several major thoroughfares, cutting off access across the heart of the city.

The shut roads include:

  • Market Street
  • Upper Parliament Street
  • Lower Parliament Street
  • King Street
  • Queen Street

The closures span key corridors connecting the Old Market Square area with the Victoria Centre, creating immediate disruption for late-night traffic and delivery vehicles.

Bus diversions and transit impact

Public transport networks have been heavily disrupted by the street closures. Nottingham City Transport announced that dozens of services across its network are unable to use their regular central stops and have been rerouted to outlying pick-up points across the perimeter of the centre.

Passengers travelling through Nottingham are being directed to temporary departure points:

  • Green line services (5 to 12) are operating from Angel Row, Canal Street, or the railway station.
  • Brown line (15 to 17) and Yellow line (68 to 71) buses are picking up on Mansfield Road near the International Community Centre.
  • Lilac (25 to 27), Blue (39 to 42), and Red (43, 44) lines have shifted to stops near Boots at the Victoria Centre.
  • Pink lines (28, 30) and Turquoise lines (77 to 79) are serving Mount Street.
  • Orange lines (34 to 36) are using Angel Row only.
  • Lime (56 to 59), Sky Blue (60, 61), and Purple (87 to 89) services are stopping on Mansfield Road near the Rose of England pub.

What is not yet known

The fire service has not yet stated whether anyone was injured in the blaze, or if anyone required treatment for smoke inhalation. The cause of the fire remains unconfirmed, with emergency responders focused on bringing the flames under control and preventing the blaze from spreading to adjoining properties.
