A fast-moving brush fire broke out in Santa Clarita on Sunday afternoon, burning more than 200 acres in less than two hours and forcing immediate evacuations across multiple neighbourhoods in Sand Canyon.

The blaze, named the Bike Fire, was reported around 1:10 p.m. near the 16400 block of Cambria Estates Lane. First responders initially arrived to find just one acre of light to medium brush alight. Pushed by erratic winds and feeding on dry fuels, the flames tore westward uphill, expanding to 20 acres, then roughly 80 acres, before surpassing 200 acres by mid-afternoon.

The Los Angeles County Fire Department estimated the fire at 230 acres by 2:37 p.m. Fire managers quickly escalated their call for assistance, upgrading the incident to a third-alarm response as the rate of spread remained critical.

Evacuation orders and warnings

Emergency officials issued mandatory evacuation orders through Genasys Protect for three specific zones:

  • SCL-NADEU-A
  • SCL-SANDSOUTH-B
  • SCL-SULTUS

Residents in several adjacent neighbourhoods have been placed under evacuation warnings, advising them to prepare to leave on short notice. Those warning zones include LAC-E119-A, SCL-CRYSTALSPRINGS, SCL-FAIROAKSRANCH, SCL-MACMILLAN, SCL-MEDLEYRIDGE, SCL-NADEU-B, SCL-ROLLINGHILLS-B, SCL-SANDSOUTH-A, and SCL-WOODLAND.

Officials cautioned that properties along Pineview Road, Pacy Road, and the junction of Mountain Park Road and Falter Road faced immediate threats from the advancing flames.

Firefighting response and conditions

The Angeles National Forest described the fire's behaviour as erratic, driven by unpredictable gusts on the hillsides. By 2:08 p.m., firefighting aircraft were mobilised to make water and retardant drops across the ridges to protect nearby subdivisions.

Fire commanders warned that the blaze had the potential to grow to 300 acres within the hour if ridge-top winds continued to push embers into unburnt brush.

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
