Karnataka food safety officials have inspected 45 ice cream manufacturing units across the state, seizing expired raw materials, issuing hygiene warnings, and confiscating substandard products.

The statewide crackdown, ordered by Health and Family Welfare Minister U T Khader, took place on Thursday, October 8. During the operation, inspectors collected 70 samples of ice cream, milk, milk powder, flavouring agents, sugar, and additives. These have been sent to government laboratories to determine whether they comply with safety standards.

Expired ingredients seized in Bengaluru

Some of the most serious violations were found in Bengaluru, where inspectors targeted two prominent establishments.

At Savara Ice Cream Cafe, located in Jayanagar 3rd Block, officials seized expired Britannia Marigold biscuits, Nandini Samrudhi milk, alkalised tea and coffee mixes, and desiccated coconut powder.

At M N Enterprises in Bilekahalli, inspectors confiscated expired plain caramel, Nestlé Milkmaid, and Milky Mist khoa. The facility was also cited for failing to meet product labelling requirements.

Both Bengaluru businesses face legal action under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, the Food Safety and Drug Administration Department said in a statement.

Violations in Raichur and Mysuru

The enforcement drive extended well beyond Bengaluru. In Raichur, inspectors served a formal notice to the Gemini Ice Cream Manufacturing Unit after discovering unhygienic conditions on the premises.

Meanwhile, in Mysuru, officials seized ice cream products worth ’20,000 from the John Candy Ice Cream Manufacturing Unit. The seizure was prompted by deficiencies in the establishment’s product labelling.

What happens next

The department has warned that this is not a one-off campaign. Officials said that special inspection drives targeting ice cream manufacturing units will continue across Karnataka to protect public health.

Establishments found violating food safety and labelling standards will face prosecution under national food safety laws.
