Chief Justice of India Surya Kant called on graduating law students at the National Law School of India University in Bengaluru to defend liberty, maintain professional integrity, and uphold constitutional values as guardians of the nation's legal architecture.

Addressing the university's 34th annual convocation on Saturday in his capacity as Chancellor, CJI Surya Kant emphasised that legal education extends far beyond mastering statutes or constitutional principles. He described law school as a space where diverse ideas collide, urging graduates to cultivate fairness, intellectual independence, and respect for differing viewpoints.

"The legal profession is not for the faint of heart," the Chief Justice told the gathering. He stressed that while the discipline demands the courage to stand up for justice, it equally requires the humility to listen to voices that are often overlooked.

Key themes of the address

Highlighting the vital role of the judiciary and legal fraternity in sustaining national stability and public trust, CJI Surya Kant cautioned graduates against compromising their principles for professional convenience or taking shortcuts. He noted that every contract drafted, case argued, and judgment delivered contributes directly to the country's institutional fabric.

Padma Shri awardee Arundhati Nag, co-founder of Ranga Shankara, graced the convocation as Chief Guest and delivered the convocation address. During the ceremony, CJI Surya Kant also paid tribute to Urvashi Krishnatra, an LL.B. graduate who passed away before receiving her degree, offering condolences to her family and classmates.
