Intruder intercepted at Kamala Harris's Malibu home after security breach

A woman managed to slip onto Kamala Harris's Malibu estate on Friday night, triggering a police response to the former Vice President's home but resulting in no arrests.

Neither Harris nor her husband, Doug Emhoff, were at the £6.2 million ($8.15 million) property during the intrusion, which took place at around 10:30 pm.

According to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, the unidentified woman originally arrived at the gated property in an Uber and approached security. After being told she could not stay, she left, only to return a short time later and make her way onto the grounds.

Private guards from Elite Asset Protection spotted her and intercepted her before she could reach the cliffside residence.

"Security personnel stopped an individual who illegally entered Vice President Harris and Second Gentleman Emhoff's property before the individual reached the home," Harris's spokesperson, Eduardo Negrón, said in a statement. He added that the couple were "grateful to the security and law enforcement personnel who responded swiftly."

Deputies from the Malibu/Lost Hills sheriff's station arrived to find the woman already back outside the property boundary. They warned her to leave, and she complied without incident. No arrest or citation was made, but local police plan to keep a closer eye on the address.

"We are stepping up patrols of the property to be safe," said Lt. Jason Duron, a watch commander at the local station.

Why was there no federal protection?

The incident has revived a tense debate over who is responsible for keeping the former Vice President safe.

Under US law, former vice presidents are entitled to six months of Secret Service protection after leaving office. While former President Joe Biden had signed an executive memorandum extending Harris's coverage, President Donald Trump revoked that extension in August 2025, several months after taking office.

Who is protecting Harris now?

The loss of federal protection left California agencies scrambling to fill the vacuum.

The Los Angeles Police Department briefly stepped in to offer security but quickly pulled back after facing intense public criticism that it was diverting valuable officers away from local crime-fighting.

The California Highway Patrol has since taken over the responsibility of assisting Harris's detail. However, state officers were not at the Malibu home on Friday night, according to CHP Sergeant Christian Stevens, leaving her security entirely in the hands of the private guards who ultimately halted the intruder.
