An Angamaly court in Kerala has rejected the bail applications of four teenagers involved in a fatal collision near Cochin International Airport that claimed three lives.

The court order comes as Nooha Sajeev, the mother of 19-year-old driver Suhail Sajeev, released a public video offering condolences to the victims' families while appealing for a fair probe and privacy for her family.

The crash occurred around 1:45 am on 11 October along the Airport-Athani road in Nedumbassery. The speeding Mini Cooper struck the rear of a scooter carrying Devika, Gopika, and Eyas — all in their early 20s and working at a local crafts store — who died from their injuries.

Court findings and medical evidence

Judicial First Class Magistrate Samyuktha M.K. dismissed the regular bail applications of Suhail Sajeev and three co-accused passengers: Ninav, Joyal S. Anto, and Ameen Sha. Suhail faces charges of culpable homicide not amounting to murder under Section 105 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, while the other three occupants were charged with abetment.

Medical reports submitted by the prosecution detailed severe intoxication and driving far beyond prescribed safety limits.

ParameterPermissible LimitRecorded Value
Blood alcohol concentration30 mg per 100 ml161 mg per 100 ml
Urine alcohol concentrationStandard baseline230 mg per 100 ml
Road speed limit60 to 70 km/hExceeding 100 km/h

The magistrate rejected defence arguments that the incident amounted to mere criminal negligence. Citing Supreme Court precedents on drunk driving and excessive speed, the court noted that the degree of intoxication and vehicle speed justified the ongoing investigation into culpable homicide.

Transport action and family statement

State enforcement authorities have moved quickly to enforce administrative procedures. Following recommendations from the investigating officers, the Ernakulam Regional Transport Officer served a show-cause notice on Suhail, giving him 14 days to respond before his driving licence is suspended or cancelled. Investigators noted that the Mini Cooper's exhaust system had also been illegally modified to generate extra noise.

In a video published online, Nooha Sajeev expressed her sorrow over the loss of life and requested that people refrain from sharing unverified claims on social media.

"We have lost three valuable lives," she said. "I can understand the pain they must be feeling. My family and I stand by them, but I also appeal for privacy for my family as the law takes its course."

Police confirmed that all four accused remain in judicial custody as technical analysis of the crash site continues.
