Stockport man admits drugging and raping his wife over two decades
The defendant pleaded guilty to 60 charges, including 21 counts of rape, while his estranged wife watched from the public gallery.
A Stockport man in his sixties has admitted to a twenty-year campaign of drugging and raping his wife, pleading guilty to dozens of charges at Manchester Minshull Street Crown Court.
The defendant, who cannot be named to protect his wife’s legal right to anonymity, entered his final pleas on Monday. Having already admitted 15 charges during a previous court appearance in June, he has now pleaded guilty to a total of 60 criminal counts.
The extensive list of charges includes 21 counts of rape, multiple counts of assault by penetration, administering a substance with intent, and sharing intimate images of his victim.
Inside the courtroom
The man's estranged wife watched the proceedings from the front row of a packed public gallery, supported by members of her family. She was seen sobbing occasionally as the charges were read out.
The defendant became visibly emotional as the hearing progressed. As he repeated the word "guilty" to dozens of separate counts, the judge eventually intervened and invited him to sit down in the dock.
The prosecution’s case is that the husband systematically drugged his wife over a period of more than two decades, allowing him to assault her without her knowledge. Under UK law, victims of sexual offences are granted lifelong anonymity, which prevents the publication of any details that could identify her, including her husband's name.
A wider prosecution
The husband's admissions of guilt do not bring the legal proceedings to a close. The wider investigation involves a total of 14 men accused of abusing the same woman.
While the husband and one other man have now admitted their roles, a significant trial lies ahead for the remaining suspects. Twelve men continue to deny multiple serious sexual offences against the victim and are expected to stand trial.
A thirteenth man has already pleaded guilty to sexual offences against her.
What happens next
The husband will not be sentenced immediately. The court confirmed that his sentencing will be delayed until the conclusion of the trial of the twelve men who have denied the charges.
He remains in legal custody awaiting that joint sentencing hearing, which will take place once the remaining trials have concluded.
