The Bharatiya Janata Party has named senior leader Dinesh Arya as its candidate for the upcoming Rajya Sabha election from Uttarakhand.

The party’s central election committee cleared Arya’s nomination on Sunday, 4 October 2026, ahead of the voting scheduled for mid-month. Arya will contest the single seat representing the hill state, which falls vacant as the term of the sitting member, the BJP’s Naresh Bansal, comes to an end on 25 November.

The October polls

The Uttarakhand contest is part of a wider set of Rajya Sabha elections scheduled for 16 October, when voting will take place for 12 seats across three states.

The bulk of the elections will be held in Uttar Pradesh, where 10 seats are up for grabs. Like Uttarakhand, the terms of the sitting members for these Uttar Pradesh seats are set to expire on 25 November. A by-election for a single seat in West Bengal will also be held on the same day.

The BJP announced Arya's candidacy after a meeting of its central election committee, which oversees the selection of candidates for major state and federal elections.

The legislative math

Under the Rajya Sabha’s election system, members are elected by the elected members of the state legislative assemblies through a system of proportional representation. Because the BJP holds a comfortable majority in the Uttarakhand legislative assembly, Arya’s election to the Upper House of Parliament is virtually assured.

The formal nomination process will begin in Dehradun, where candidates must file their papers before the state assembly secretariat. After the papers are scrutinised, the assembly will host the voting on 16 October, though the process could be completed sooner if no other candidates file nominations for the single seat.

The official transition will occur in late November, when Bansal’s six-year term officially concludes and the newly elected member takes his seat in Parliament.
