Delhi traders urge INDIA bloc to postpone November 1 Ramlila Maidan rally amid Diwali rush

Commercial associations cite severe traffic congestion and potential trade losses during the peak festive retail season in central Delhi.

By The India Decade

Delhi trader associations have urged the opposition INDIA bloc to postpone its scheduled 1 November rally at Ramlila Maidan, warning that a massive political gathering will cripple traffic and disrupt peak festive commerce ahead of Diwali.

Business representatives stated that holding a major political event in central Delhi during the height of festive buying threatens severe gridlock across key market hubs. Trade bodies highlighted that unhindered access for shoppers and goods is critical for local businesses, citing potential trade disruptions during a period when commercial turnover across main retail hubs is estimated to reach up to Rs 10,000 crore.

Traders highlight traffic and economic impact

Central Delhi markets, including Chandni Chowk, Sadar Bazar, Chawri Bazar, and Connaught Place, experience their heaviest footfall of the year in the days leading up to Diwali. Trade representatives pointed out that staging a rally at Ramlila Maidan brings thousands of buses and personal vehicles into the heart of the capital, overwhelming local parking facilities and main arterial roads.

The Bharatiya Janata Party criticised the opposition alliance for planning a large demonstration during the peak retail period, arguing that political parties should avoid creating unnecessary hurdles for small merchants and shoppers when festive economic activity is at its highest.

Opposition response to merchant demands

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and senior leader Rahul Gandhi had previously urged supporters to join the 1 November rally at Ramlila Maidan. Following representations from local business groups, Rahul Gandhi acknowledged the concerns raised by the trading community, stating that the party heard their feedback while reiterating the political background of the planned demonstration.

It is not yet clear whether the INDIA bloc will alter the date or venue of the gathering to accommodate the commercial schedule of the capital's markets.
