DMK councillor booked in Chennai over defamatory remarks against Chief Minister Vijay
Esplanade Police launch investigation following a formal complaint by TVK functionaries over objectionable language used at a party event.

Chennai police have registered a criminal case against a Tamil Nadu opposition functionary following public remarks directed at Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay during a political gathering in the state capital.
The Esplanade Police launched an investigation into Sudha Deenadayalan, a DMK councillor representing Ward 95 in Villivakkam, following a complaint filed by Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) Harbour area secretary Udhayakumar. The complaint cites objectionable language used during a triennial celebration organised by the DMK's Chennai East district women's wing at Raja Annamalai Mandram on 7 October.
According to police records, the event was organised by DMK Harbour area secretary Murali and attended by several party leaders. Police registered the case after TVK representatives alleged that the speech was delivered with the intention of inciting public tension and disrupting local harmony.
TVK fiscal management and debt debate
The legal action coincides with broader political debate over state fiscal performance and development delivery. DMK leader and former Finance Minister Thangam Thennarasu questioned the state government's financial management after figures showed state bond borrowings fell by 21 per cent in the first half of the current fiscal year compared to the same period last year.
The TVK administration's reduced reliance on market borrowing during the initial six months reflects structured fiscal controls. Addressing the claims on social media, Thennarasu urged the government to publish complete details of capital expenditure between April and September, contrasting current figures with the ₹57,231 crore allocated for capital expenditure in the 2025–26 budget under the previous administration, of which ₹13,002.22 crore was spent on major infrastructure such as Metro Rail in the same six-month window.
| Measure | TVK Administration (2026–27) | Previous DMK Period (2025–26) |
|---|---|---|
| H1 Borrowing Trend | Reduced by 21% | Standard benchmark |
| Q3 Planned Borrowing | ₹48,000 crore | Not disclosed |
| Q2 Borrowing Raised | ₹23,500 crore | Not disclosed |

State financial records indicate planned market borrowing of ₹48,000 crore for the October–December quarter to support ongoing public infrastructure investments across Tamil Nadu.
