The Election Commission of India has launched a targeted voter registration campaign running until 9 October, aiming to bring young and first-time voters onto the electoral rolls across states where recent revision exercises have concluded.

State poll bodies, including Tamil Nadu, are carrying out the initiative in regions where the Special Intensive Revision of rolls is already finished. Chief Electoral Officer Archana Patnaik confirmed through an official statement that district authorities will organise dedicated camps, with local officials encouraged to hold the sessions on 10 October to register eligible young citizens.

Focus on urban centres and college campuses

Election officials are directing extra attention toward urban centres and larger cities, where voter registration among young residents frequently lags behind rural turnout.

To bridge that gap, field teams will tap into existing Electoral Literacy Clubs set up across schools and colleges. These student bodies are tasked with raising awareness among newly eligible teenagers, providing direct assistance with paperwork, and ensuring eligible students complete the registration process before the window shuts.

District Election Officers have received instructions to publicise the registration push through local news outlets and their official social media pages so families and eligible young people know where to go.

Monitoring at the booth level

Behind the scenes, administrative oversight is being stepped up to make sure ground teams actually process applications. Electoral Registration Officers are instructed to hold regular check-in meetings with Booth Level Officers to review registration numbers, resolve any hitches on the ground, and keep the rollout on schedule.

The push comes as the poll authority regularly reviews voter registers ahead of upcoming election cycles, prioritising newly eligible 18-year-olds who often miss the initial roll revisions.
