The Uttar Pradesh cabinet has approved a resolution to rename the upcoming Noida International Airport at Jewar to Narendra Modi International Airport.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath announced the decision on Friday following a cabinet meeting, describing the under-construction facility as a major gift from the Prime Minister to the state. The airport, located in Jewar near Noida, is expected to become Uttar Pradesh's largest aviation hub and the second international airport serving the National Capital Region.

"The Council of Ministers of Uttar Pradesh expresses its gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for gifting the state the Noida International Airport at Jewar," Adityanath said. "The Cabinet has approved a proposal to name it Narendra Modi International Airport, Noida-Jewar."

Marking 25 years of public service

The renaming resolution was timed to coincide with another cabinet motion celebrating Modi's 25 years of continuous service as a head of government. This period dates back to 7 October 2001, when Modi first took office as the Chief Minister of Gujarat, prior to becoming Prime Minister in 2014.

Adityanath said the state took particular pride in Modi's leadership because he represents Uttar Pradesh in parliament as the MP for Varanasi.

Shift in infrastructure and governance

During his briefing to reporters, Adityanath credited the Prime Minister's administrative experience for a shift in Uttar Pradesh's governance since the BJP took power in the state in 2017.

He claimed that before 2017, the state was held back by administrative inefficiency, a lack of basic facilities, and public insecurity. Adityanath said the state has since adopted a new work culture focused on improved law and order, transparent governance, and modern infrastructure.

The Jewar airport project is central to these infrastructure plans. Once operational, the airport is intended to ease passenger pressure on Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport and boost economic growth across western Uttar Pradesh.

The state cabinet's renaming resolution will now be forwarded to the central government for final administrative clearance.
