President Droupadi Murmu has appointed senior leader Dr Sudha Yadav as the new Governor of Karnataka, marking a notable constitutional transition in the southern state.

Yadav becomes only the second woman to take charge at Raj Bhavan in Bengaluru, following V.S. Rama Devi, who held the office between 1999 and 2002. Her appointment comes as part of a wider administrative reshuffle across six states announced by Rashtrapati Bhavan on Monday.

She succeeds ThaawarChand Gehlot, who had served as Karnataka’s governor since 21 July 2021.

Who is Sudha Yadav?

Hailing from Haryana, Yadav brings a blend of academic distinction, legislative experience, and public service to the constitutional post. She holds a master’s degree in Chemistry along with a doctorate from the Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee.

Her entry into national public life followed personal sacrifice. The wife of Kargil martyr Deputy Commandant Sukhbir Singh Yadav, she went on to contest parliamentary elections and represented Haryana's Mahendragarh constituency in the Lok Sabha between 1999 and 2004.

Over the decades, Yadav established herself as a trusted organisational figure within the Bharatiya Janata Party, rising to serve on its Parliamentary Board, the party's apex decision-making council. She has also served as a member of the National Commission for Backward Classes, where she worked extensively on social welfare and community representation.
