Law enforcement acts after unauthorized gathering

Mumbai Police have registered a case against Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray, Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) leader Amit Thackeray, and at least 25 others following an unauthorized sit-in protest in the city's Shivaji Park area.

Authorities had refused permission for the public demonstration, which was called in connection with an agitation against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Despite the absence of police clearance, workers gathered near Shiv Sena Bhavan on Sunday evening, obstructing movement and disrupting public order in the busy Dadar neighborhood.

Police enforce public safety measures

Security forces moved swiftly to control the situation and prevent further escalation, detaining approximately 300 individuals who attempted to defy official restrictions. Police confirmed that those named in the First Information Report (FIR) face charges under Section 189 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for unlawful assembly, alongside provisions of the Maharashtra Police Act.

Alongside Aaditya Thackeray and Amit Thackeray, the police complaint explicitly names MNS leader Sandeep Deshpande and Shiv Sena (UBT) leaders Varun Sardesai and Mahesh Sawant. Social activist Anjali Damania was among those briefly taken into custody during police operations to clear the vicinity.

Police officers maintained strict vigilance around the iconic ground to safeguard public infrastructure and restore normal traffic flow, subsequently releasing detained participants as standard administrative protocol required.
