NDA local body polls seat talks in Andhra Pradesh enter crucial stretch
Talks continue across 123 urban local bodies as coalition leaders balance municipal ambitions and caste reservations.

Negotiations among the ruling National Democratic Alliance partners in Andhra Pradesh over seat allocations for forthcoming urban local body elections remain underway, as the Bharatiya Janata Party and Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan's Jana Sena Party seek expanded representation across the state's civic corporations.
Chief Minister and Telugu Desam Party president N. Chandrababu Naidu met BJP state president P.V.N. Madhav and Health Minister Satya Kumar Yadav to outline initial formulas. BJP representatives declined an opening suggestion of roughly five per cent of seats, advocating instead for an allocation reflective of the party's growing national momentum and grassroots organisation.
Separately, TDP state president Palla Srinivasa Rao and Water Resources Minister Nimmala Ramanaidu conferred with Pawan Kalyan. The JSP leadership has emphasised the party's central role in cementing the alliance ahead of the 2024 assembly triumph and expressed a desire to address cadre aspirations by contesting eight of the state's 17 municipal mayoral offices. The TDP has been weighing offers of five or six mayoral posts as both parties work toward an equitable balance.
Urban bodies in Andhra Pradesh
The seat allocations cover leadership posts, corporator slots, and ward wards across all 123 urban local bodies in Andhra Pradesh:
| Civic tier | Total bodies | Leadership designation |
|---|---|---|
| Municipal corporations | 17 | Mayor |
| Municipalities | 88 | Chairperson |
| Nagar panchayats | 18 | Chairperson |
| Total urban bodies | 123 | Municipal heads |
Negotiators must also align allocations with statutory reservation rosters for mayoral positions, which earmark specific posts for Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, Backward Classes, and women candidates.
Sustained civic momentum
The civic parleys in Andhra Pradesh come alongside strong electoral performances for the alliance nationally. In Gujarat, the BJP retained control of the Gandhinagar Municipal Corporation, winning 38 of 44 seats. Congress secured five seats and an independent candidate won one, while the Aam Aadmi Party failed to open its account.
| Party | 2021 seats | Current seats |
|---|---|---|
| BJP | 41 | 38 |
| Congress | 2 | 5 |
| AAP | 0 | 0 |
| Independent | 1 | 1 |
Gujarat BJP president Jagdish Vishwakarma credited the Gandhinagar victory to public confidence in urban administration and delivery. Back in Andhra Pradesh, coalition leaders expect additional rounds of discussions in Amaravati over the coming days to finalise specific ward rosters, aiming to present a unified front for municipal development.
