Nellore municipal polls see candidates leverage personal networks as nominations close

Candidates contesting the Nellore Municipal Corporation elections turned to personal networks and long-standing social ties to build campaign momentum as the nomination period closed on Sunday.

Campaigning across the city has intensified, with contenders for both the Mayor position and corporator seats reaching out to former colleagues, neighbourhood elders, and local leaders. The election setup highlights the robust democratic framework and active public participation across local urban bodies in Andhra Pradesh.

Key contenders in the Nellore Mayoral race

The contest for Mayor pits two well-known local figures against each other, both relying on strong public accessibility and deep community roots.

Cross-party relationships in local politics

Nellore's political dynamics are distinct for personal and familial ties that routinely cross party lines. Prominent political families in the district—including the Anams, Mekapatis, Nallapureddys, Nedurumallis, Adalas, Kakanis, Somireddys, Vemireddys, and Kotamreddys—have members aligned with different political platforms while keeping personal relationships intact.

Candidates frequently exchange pleasantries and maintain contact with opponents. In recent campaign activity, TDP Mayor candidate Poluboyina Roop Kumar Yadav formally visited former Nellore Urban Development Authority Chairman M. Dwarakanath at his residence to seek his blessing and support.

With nominations concluded, both major camps are now focusing on grassroots voter mobilization and city-level developmental priorities as polling approaches.
