Pargat Singh appointed Punjab Congress chief after Raja Warring resigns
The former Olympian and three-time MLA takes charge of a faction-ridden state unit ahead of the 2027 assembly elections.

A leadership transition ahead of 2027
The Congress party has appointed former hockey captain and Jalandhar Cantonment MLA Pargat Singh as the new president of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee.
The appointment, announced on Friday by Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, comes immediately after the resignation of Amarinder Singh Raja Warring, who had led the state unit since April 2022.
Warring met senior leader Rahul Gandhi in Delhi on Friday to formally hand in his resignation. The leadership change comes as the party attempts to resolve months of internal friction and prepare for the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections.
Pilot's influence and internal friction
Speaking to reporters after his resignation, Warring suggested that his departure may have been orchestrated by the newly appointed All India Congress Committee in-charge for Punjab, Sachin Pilot. Pilot recently replaced Bhupesh Baghel in the role.
"Given my long journey in politics, I feel that Sachin Pilot must have decided it was time to remove 'Raja' from the post," Warring told reporters, using his popular nickname. "I don't have concrete proof of this, but perhaps the General Secretary felt that Raja should be removed."
Warring added that he had already communicated his views directly to Gandhi. "There is no one left after Rahul Gandhi to whom I could explain what should or shouldn't happen," he said.
The state unit has been dogged by factionalism for years. Before Pilot took over, Bhupesh Baghel had spent weeks trying to mediate between rival groups of senior leaders in Punjab, but made little headway. Warring’s exit appears to be the first major move by Pilot to assert control and reshape the state leadership.
From Olympic hockey to political leadership
In appointing Pargat Singh, the Congress is turning to a high-profile figure with a reputation outside of traditional politics. The 61-year-old captained the Indian national hockey team at the Barcelona Olympics in 1992 and the Atlanta Olympics in 1996, and was awarded the Padma Shri in 1998.
Before his political career, Singh was a prominent defender in Indian hockey, playing for Punjab Police and Indian Railways. He later served as Punjab’s director of sports, where he was credited with building hockey turfs and sports infrastructure in rural areas, before briefly coaching the national side in 1998.
Singh entered politics in 2012, winning the Jalandhar Cantonment seat for the Shiromani Akali Dal. He later switched to Congress, retaining the seat in the 2017 and 2022 elections. He has previous experience in the state administration, having served as sports minister in Charanjit Singh Channi’s cabinet between September 2021 and March 2022.
He also has organisational experience within the party. In 2021, the then-state chief Navjot Singh Sidhu appointed Singh as the general secretary in charge of organisation.
Singh now faces the immediate challenge of uniting a deeply divided state party. Sachin Pilot had held extensive consultations with Punjab leaders before advising the high command on the change. Singh’s main task will be to steady the party machine and manage competing factions before the state goes to the polls.
