Shashi Tharoor slams Delhi crackdown on CJP protest as 'undeclared Emer-GenZ'
The Congress MP questioned the massive police presence, metro station closures and internet suspensions enforced to block a youth demonstration against the Election Commission.

Central Delhi turned into a fortress on Saturday as police and paramilitary forces blocked roads, shut metro stations and detained hundreds of protesters to prevent a demonstration called by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) against the Election Commission.
The scale of the security measures drew sharp criticism from opposition leaders, led by Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, who accused the government of imposing an 'undeclared Emer-GenZ' on young citizens questioning electoral integrity.
What happened in Delhi?
Authorities deployed tens of thousands of security personnel across the national capital, placed concrete barriers and spike strips on major roads, and sealed off Jantar Mantar, the city's designated protest site. Police said permission for the CJP demonstration had been denied due to security considerations and procedural requirements.
The lockdown disrupted public transport across the city, forcing the closure of 45 metro stations and the cancellation of 250 trains. Internet services were also suspended in parts of central Delhi, while police invoked Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita to ban public gatherings.
By Saturday afternoon, Delhi Police had detained more than 500 protesters trying to reach Jantar Mantar, alongside over 600 individuals picked up across 15 districts as part of preventive measures. Among those held were senior CJP functionaries Abhijeet Dipke, Saurav Das, and Ashutosh Ranka, who were detained shortly after landing on a flight from Mumbai.
Why are people protesting?
The demonstration was organised by the CJP to demand the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged voter list manipulation during the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls and alterations involving Form 6 registration.
As police sealed off Jantar Mantar and surrounding routes, student groups tried to adapt. All India Students' Association national president Neha Bora called on supporters to assemble at Dilli Haat instead.
How did opposition leaders react?
Returning to Delhi early Saturday morning, Tharoor said he had rarely witnessed such restrictive measures in the national capital, questioning why similar resources are not deployed for public safety.
"A government confident in the fairness of its elections would welcome questions about them, whereas one that turns its capital into a fortress to avoid them only deepens the very suspicions it seeks to suppress," Tharoor said on X. "The government should provide answers, not lathis; expression, not repression."
Tharoor added that internet shutdowns in the centre of the capital were "most regressive", arguing that restricting movement and detaining young people from their homes undermines democratic norms.
Other opposition figures also condemned the police action. Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu said the right to peaceful protest is fundamental to Indian democracy. Sukhu confirmed that the Congress party intends to raise the matter before the Supreme Court on Monday.
What happens next?
With primary CJP organisers held at undisclosed locations, CJP leader Ajinkya Shinde is expected to direct the movement's next steps. Opposition parties have vowed to challenge the detentions legally while continuing to demand accountability from the Election Commission.
