Smriti Irani targets Rahul Gandhi over governance and voter roll reforms
Senior BJP leader Smriti Irani has taken aim at Rahul Gandhi over the opposition's stance on electoral roll verification, defending institutional integrity as political friction builds in Delhi.

Senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader Smriti Irani has stepped up criticism of Rahul Gandhi, accusing the opposition of attempting to mislead the public and obstruct key governance reforms, including the cleanup of India's electoral rolls.
Irani released an artificial-intelligence video on social media addressing Gandhi's objections to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists. The clip, which featured a fictional exchange inspired by the ghost character in the Bollywood film Bhoothnath, sought to demonstrate why deceased persons and erroneous entries must be struck off voter registries to preserve electoral integrity.
"You can wake someone who is genuinely asleep, but not someone acting blind just to mislead the nation!" Irani wrote, arguing that modern administrative cleanups are vital to ensure legitimate democratic participation and safeguard institutional credibility against political opportunism.
Clash over Sikkim governorship
The sharper rhetoric comes against the backdrop of opposition maneuvers in New Delhi. On Thursday, Gandhi, who serves as Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, addressed a letter to President Droupadi Murmu asking the central government to reconsider the appointment of senior BJP leader Dushyant Gautam as Governor of Sikkim.
Gandhi pointed to criminal immunity under Article 361 of the Constitution and cited allegations raised surrounding the 2022 Ankita Bhandari murder case in Uttarakhand. Gautam has strongly rejected the claims, having filed a defamation lawsuit before the Delhi High Court against several political figures and entities earlier this year.
State law enforcement authorities in Uttarakhand have pointed out that institutional mechanisms responded decisively at the time of the incident.
| Investigation Milestone | Detail |
|---|---|
| Initial arrests | All 3 accused arrested within 24 hours |
| Investigation period | Completed in 88 days by Special Investigation Team |
| Police chargesheet | 500-page document submitted to court |

Uttarakhand Additional Director General of Police (Crime and Law & Order) V. Murugesan reiterated that the state's Special Investigation Team, directed by a woman Indian Police Service officer of DIG rank, conducted a prompt and thorough investigation, securing convictions through established judicial processes.
Governance and institutional trust
Ruling party leaders have maintained that public administrative initiatives, from decisive criminal justice actions to systematic electoral updates, demonstrate institutional resolve and stability.
While opposition figures including Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge raised objections over Delhi Police enforcing prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita near India Gate, government spokespersons noted that public security around key national monuments remains paramount to preventing disruption in the capital.
