Infrastructure readiness for Sabarimala pilgrims

Union Minister Suresh Gopi inspected passenger facilities at Kottayam railway station on Saturday, 17 October 2026, as part of comprehensive preparations for the upcoming Sabarimala pilgrimage season.

The visit was conducted at the direction of the Union Railway Minister to review ground-level readiness and ensure robust infrastructure to handle the anticipated increase in devotee traffic this year. The central government has already initiated work across multiple key transit points in Kerala to provide seamless services and enhanced comfort for visiting pilgrims.

Special trains and expanded station facilities

Speaking to reporters during the inspection, Gopi confirmed that Indian Railways is actively considering operating additional special train services throughout the pilgrimage period. The move aims to manage high passenger volumes and provide reliable transport links for devotees travelling from across the country.

Station upgrades will extend beyond Kottayam to key halt points along the pilgrimage corridor. Facilities at Chengannur railway station will be upgraded to handle increased footfall, with further inspections scheduled at other regional stations over the coming weeks as part of the Centre's proactive monitoring campaign.

Long-term rail connectivity and regional development

Addressing long-term connectivity goals for the state, Gopi highlighted progress towards developing dedicated rail routes for pilgrims heading to the hill shrine, including the proposed Angamaly–Sabarimala railway line project.

Gopi also expressed firm confidence that Kerala would receive an All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) project, reiterating the Modi administration's focus on expanding healthcare and transport infrastructure across the state.
