Tamil Nadu chief minister's Silverstone trip sparks political row over investment claims

A political row has erupted in Tamil Nadu over Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay's first official trip abroad, with opposition parties demanding proof of the investments he claims to have secured in London.

Vijay left for the United Kingdom on 10 September on a week-long visit alongside his cabinet colleague Aadhav Arjuna and senior officials. The tour was billed as a major drive to attract foreign investment to the state. However, after images emerged of the chief minister at the Silverstone circuit flagging off the 2026 Michelin Le Mans Cup and meeting actor and racing driver Ajith Kumar, opposition parties quickly went on the offensive.

The racing dispute

At Silverstone, Vijay toured the race control areas and track to examine the safety and operational infrastructure used for international endurance racing. State officials defended the visit, explaining that the lessons learned would help the state build its own proposed Motor Sports City and open up international avenues for local talent.

But political rivals were quick to dismiss the official explanation. DMK spokesperson TKS Elangovan claimed the trip's stated purpose was a cover. "Everybody saw that he had gone to visit the car race of his friend Ajith," Elangovan said.

AIADMK general secretary and former chief minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami also pointed out the lack of photographic evidence showing Vijay in high-level trade meetings. "So far no news regarding attracting investments has emerged," Palaniswami said. "Instead, photographs of a specific event he attended have come out. That is the actual news."

Demands for transparency

Other opposition voices have joined the chorus calling for details on the trip's cost and outcomes. CPI(M) state secretary P. Shanmugam demanded a formal white paper outlining all investments received since Vijay's Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) administration took office on 10 May, calling the government's investment claims non-transparent. BJP state chief Nainar Nagenthran also demanded a full list of participants and a breakdown of the total expenditure incurred during the UK trip.

Government defends the tour

Supporters of the chief minister insist the trip has been highly productive. MDMK MP Durai Vaiko said the visit was crucial for job creation and promised that photographs and details of meetings with top business leaders would be released soon.

Government representatives also pointed to concrete agreements signed during the London trip, including a partnership with Sigma Technology Group to establish Global Capability Centres in Tamil Nadu. The chief minister is scheduled to return to the state on 17 September.
