Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe has dismissed rumours of his transfer from the post, making clear that the state's regulatory drive against adulterated food and spurious medicines will continue without pause.

Speculation over his administrative standing surfaced after the Maharashtra government appointed the senior Indian Administrative Service officer as secretary of a five-member inquiry committee tasked with probing alleged examination irregularities and paper leaks in the Maharashtra Public Service Commission.

Taking to social media platform X on Monday night to address the claims directly, Mundhe clarified that his dual responsibilities do not mean an exit from his existing position.

"No, I have not been transferred from FDA," Mundhe said. "I continue to serve as Commissioner, FDA Maharashtra. Our fight against unsafe, substandard, adulterated food and spurious, substandard drugs goes on."

Why rumours emerged over the MPSC panel

The chatter gained traction over the weekend after the state administration established the five-member panel to examine operational governance and recruitment integrity within the MPSC. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced that the panel will review the tenures of both current and former chairpersons and members of the state recruitment commission, moving decisively to address grievances raised by job aspirants across the state.

Because Mundhe was named secretary to the inquiry team, observers questioned whether the fresh assignment marked another sudden shift in an administrative career that has seen frequent transfers. Instead, the administration entrusted him with the additional mandate while keeping his leadership at the regulatory body firmly intact.

Regulatory push under the Food and Drug Administration

During his tenure at the FDA, Mundhe has spearheaded an extensive enforcement push aimed at improving consumer safety, compliance, and public health standards. The department has intensified inspections, targeted raids, and statutory enforcement against commercial eateries, manufacturing units, and retailers suspected of dealing in substandard or adulterated products.

The FDA's uncompromising enforcement approach has drawn widespread support from consumer advocacy bodies welcoming heightened transparency and governance. While certain restaurant associations and food business operators have resisted the scrutiny—taking some enforcement actions to court for legal review—the state's commitment to firm regulatory standards remains steady as Mundhe continues to lead the department.
