Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has challenged Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav to a direct face-to-face electoral contest in Ayodhya, pointing to the temple city's transformation into a major cultural and infrastructure hub under his administration.

Speaking at a public gathering in Balrampur on Saturday, the Chief Minister accepted Yadav's earlier dare to fight from Ayodhya, inviting the opposition leader to file his nomination alongside him. Adityanath stated that the ruling administration had prioritised the comprehensive rejuvenation of Ayodhya, converting it from a neglected town prone to blackouts into a global pilgrimage destination.

"Akhilesh ji, Ayodhya is our sacred abode," Adityanath told the gathering. "I visit Ayodhya repeatedly to ensure that there is no lapse in its development, and the identity of Uttar Pradesh is not tarnished in any way. It is a centre of our faith and devotion. We go there not to contest elections, but for its development."

What sparked the Ayodhya contest

The political exchange began after Yadav claimed the Bharatiya Janata Party was struggling to identify a viable candidate for the Ayodhya assembly seat, which falls within the Faizabad Lok Sabha constituency. The Samajwadi Party has already nominated former legislator Tej Narayan, also known as Pawan Pandey, for the seat.

Rather than accept the direct electoral duel, Yadav sought to turn the question back on the ruling party on Sunday in Lucknow. Speaking after paying tribute to socialist thinker Jayaprakash Narayan at the Jayaprakash Narayan International Centre, Yadav claimed the Chief Minister needed to secure his own ticket from party leadership before issuing dares.

"Those whose own tickets are not confirmed are talking about tickets. The Chief Minister should first get his own ticket confirmed," Yadav told reporters, maintaining that his party's local nominee was sufficient to mount a challenge.

Infrastructure and law and order in focus

Adityanath highlighted his government's administrative track record across the state, contrasting Ayodhya's current status with the conditions during previous opposition rule. He noted that Ayodhya once received only three to four hours of electricity daily and faced frequent civic neglect, whereas comprehensive planning has brought round-the-clock power, improved urban amenities, and major public works.

The Chief Minister pointed out that nine and a half years of firm governance had eliminated public riots across Uttar Pradesh, establishing a reliable climate of security for women and attracting widespread investment. Adityanath noted that his administration has delivered public sector jobs to 950,000 young people and instituted rapid compensation mechanisms for disaster-hit households within 24 hours.

He also criticised past opposition administrations for stalling key infrastructure, including a long-pending bridge at Mathura Ghat that saw completion only under the present government.

Adityanath currently represents Gorakhpur Urban in the state assembly, while Yadav serves as the Member of Parliament for Kannauj. The exchange sets an early tone for the Uttar Pradesh assembly elections, with the ruling administration firmly leaning on its delivery of civic infrastructure, cultural revitalisation, and public stability.
