A 17-year-old senior at Franklin High School in Los Angeles died on Wednesday after falling from a fourth-floor building on campus, moments after being assaulted in a classroom.

Family members identified the student as Xavier Nungaray. Flowers, candles and written messages quickly accumulated outside the Highland Park school as grief and anger spread through the neighbourhood.

Circumstances surrounding the death have drawn intense scrutiny following the circulation of phone footage recorded on campus shortly before the fall. The Los Angeles Police Department said officers found no evidence of foul play in the immediate mechanism of his death, but acknowledged detectives are reviewing videos that show Xavier being targeted inside a classroom.

The footage captured two students engaged in a heated verbal exchange while an adult, identified as a teacher, tried to step between them and calm the situation. The confrontation escalated, with Xavier being struck in the face. Further video showed him fleeing the room, running down an adjacent corridor, and vaulting over the fourth-floor railing.

Family alleges persistent bullying

Xavier's stepmother said he had endured bullying throughout his years at the school and had long been reluctant to report what was happening to staff. Relatives described him as gentle and reserved, struggling silently with the intimidation he faced from peers.

Parents whose children attended the school arrived at the campus gates on Thursday morning, visibly shaken. Some opted to keep their children home as classes resumed.

"You think that being at school, they're safe," said Eleo Rolon, a parent whose daughter was friends with Xavier. She described him as a quiet, kind teenager who did not cause trouble.

Support services and vigils

The Los Angeles Unified School District deployed crisis counsellors to the campus on Thursday to support classmates, teachers and staff affected by the death. While administrators urged calm, students organised an evening vigil outside the building to remember Xavier and demand greater accountability over harassment.

Questions remain over how the dispute started, whether staff had prior warnings about friction between the boys, and how long the confrontation went on before it turned violent. Police have not announced any formal charges or disciplinary actions against the student seen throwing the punch.

Investigators are continuing to review footage and interview witnesses who saw both the classroom dispute and the moments that followed.
