Sudden illness in Mumbai

Payal Mehta, a senior political journalist and assistant editor with CNN-News18, died suddenly in Mumbai on Sunday after falling ill. She was 46.

Mehta was visiting Mumbai when she began feeling unwell in the early hours of 20 September. She was rushed to a local hospital at around 2:00 AM, but medical staff were unable to revive her. Senior journalist Sheela Bhatt wrote on social media that Mehta developed sudden uneasiness and, "before any treatment could be administered, her pulse went silent."

A respected voice in Parliament

Her sudden death has brought a wave of tributes from across India’s political spectrum, reflecting the deep respect she commanded during years of covering Parliament, the Union government, and the ruling BJP.

Known for her extensive network of contacts and relentless work ethic, Mehta was a familiar and constant presence in the corridors of Parliament. CNN-News18 remembered her as "one of the standout political reporters of her generation," whose access to political figures was matched by her sharp understanding of national affairs.

Tributes from across the political spectrum

Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the national condolences, describing Mehta as a hardworking reporter who remained firmly connected to the ground. "Beyond her work, she will be remembered for her kindness and warmth," the Prime Minister said.

Opposition Leader Rahul Gandhi and Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge both expressed deep sadness over her death, with Kharge calling her a diligent journalist with a keen grasp of public affairs.

Those who worked closely with her in Delhi spoke of her stamina and dedication. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh recalled seeing her on the Parliament beat from early morning until late at night during busy legislative sessions, fulfilling her duties with "remarkable dedication."

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju expressed shock at the news, noting that he had attended a prayer service for Mehta’s father just a few days earlier. "Payal used to be as regular as me in Parliament during sessions," Rijiju said, calling her a true professional.

Other senior figures, including Home Minister Amit Shah, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, and Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw — who described Mehta as a "dear friend" — also paid tribute to her career and dedication.

Mehta’s warmth and ability to build lasting professional relationships were a recurring theme. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who had known her for many years, said she brought an "infectious energy" to her work and deeply valued her personal connections. Maharashtra leader Devendra Fadnavis recalled that she made a point of meeting him whenever he travelled to New Delhi, remembering her as a reporter who was "always on the field."
