Subsidised inputs for betel vine cultivation

Vettikavala grama panchayat in Kerala has launched a new welfare scheme providing subsidised organic fertilizers to betel vine farmers across the local body. The targeted intervention seeks to strengthen traditional agricultural practices and bolster sustainable livelihoods for rural growers.

Panchayat officials emphasized that proper soil nutrition and systematic plant care are essential for maintaining healthy betel vine plantations. With appropriate organic feeding, a single vine can provide continuous, high-yield harvests over an extended operational cycle, ensuring a steady income stream for smallholders.

Scheme eligibility and financial structure

The project is structured to offer direct support to active cultivators within the panchayat boundaries. To participate in the scheme, farmers must be cultivating betel vines on a minimum land area of five cents.

Qualified growers will receive a comprehensive organic fertilizer package valued at ₹2,000. Under the financial terms set by the local body, the panchayat provides a 75 per cent subsidy on the package cost, meaning eligible farmers pay only ₹500 for the full set of organic nutrients.

The panchayat has allocated ₹60,000 from its development fund for the current financial year to support the initiative.

Beneficiary selection and agency distribution

A total of 40 farmers have been selected to receive the subsidised fertilizers in the current phase. The selection process was conducted transparently through local grama sabha meetings to ensure assistance reaches genuine cultivators in the community.

Selected farmers receive official authorization permits issued by the panchayat, which can be redeemed at designated distribution centers. To guarantee the supply of certified, high-grade organic fertilizers, the panchayat has partnered with established public and cooperative sector organizations.

Distribution is being routed through the Kerala Agro Machinery Corporation Limited (KAICO), the Regional Agro Industrial Development Co-operative of Kerala Ltd (RAIDCO), and the local Service Co-operative Society.

Underlining the local government's commitment to grassroots development, Vettikavala grama panchayat president Aji Animon said the local body will continue to introduce tailored agricultural welfare measures. He affirmed that the administration aims to expand betel vine cultivation and deliver sustained financial and technical support to the region's farming community in future financial cycles.
